IELTS Writing Vocabulary
Vocabulary is not about using long, rare words. It is about using the right word accurately in the right context, and having enough range to talk about common IELTS topics without repeating yourself.
What band 7 actually means
"Sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision; occasional inaccuracies in word choice and spelling." Notice: precision, not exoticism. An accurate common word beats a misused rare one every time.
Build vocabulary by topic, not alphabetically
IELTS essays cluster around a dozen themes: education, technology, environment, health, work, society, government, crime, media, family, travel, culture. Learn collocations and phrases for each theme, not single-word translations.
Collocations are the secret
Native speakers notice collocation errors even when individual words are correct. "Make a decision" not "do a decision"; "reach a conclusion" not "do a conclusion"; "pose a threat" not "do a threat". Build these in pairs.
Paraphrase, do not synonym-swap
A common band-6 move is to replace every key word with a thesaurus synonym. The result is often unnatural or inaccurate. Better to vary by changing the structure of the sentence instead.
Frequently asked
How many words do I need to know for band 7?
You do not need an enormous vocabulary — you need to use the words you do know accurately and flexibly. A few thousand active words, used well, is enough.
Should I memorise idioms?
No. Academic writing does not use idioms, and misusing one is a quick way to look like you are copying memorised phrases.
