IELTS Writing Task 2 Topics

Task 2 questions fall into a handful of recurring types. Recognising the type tells you what structure your answer needs before you write a single sentence. Practise by type, not at random.

Opinion (agree/disagree) questions

"To what extent do you agree or disagree?" These require a clear position stated in the introduction and held consistently. The most common mistake is fence-sitting or shifting position in the conclusion.

Discussion (discuss both views) questions

"Discuss both views and give your own opinion." You must genuinely cover both sides, then give a clear personal position. Covering only one view caps Task Response.

Problem–solution and cause–solution questions

These ask why something happens and what should be done. Each body paragraph should pair a clearly identified cause or problem with a specific, realistic solution — not a vague call to raise awareness.

Two-part questions

Two direct questions joined by "and". Both must be answered explicitly and roughly equally. Missing one part is the single fastest way to lose Task Response marks.

How to practise efficiently

Write one essay per type under timed conditions, then check it and revise only the paragraphs that cost you the most marks. Rotating types beats rewriting the same topic.
