IELTS Problem Solution Essay
Problem-solution questions reward clarity: identify real causes and pair each with a realistic solution. The trap is writing vague solutions like "the government should raise awareness" — examiners have read it a hundred times.
Causes, problems, or both?
Read the question carefully. Some ask for causes and solutions; others for problems and solutions; some for all three. Missing a part is the fastest way to lose Task Response marks.
The safest structure
Introduction, Body 1 (causes / problems — two main ones), Body 2 (solutions — paired with the causes), Conclusion. This keeps everything organised and easy to follow.
What makes a solution band 7+
Specific, realistic, and tied directly to the cause. Instead of "schools should teach children better", write "primary schools could introduce a weekly 30-minute financial literacy lesson, starting at age nine" — that is developed.
Cohesion tip
Use phrases like "One way to tackle this is…", "A second approach would be…", and "Perhaps the most effective measure is…" to signal the shift from problem to solution clearly.
Frequently asked
Can I write only one solution?
You can, but two well-developed solutions are safer and give you more to say, which helps word count and Task Response.
Should I write causes and solutions in separate paragraphs?
Yes — it is much clearer for the examiner and improves your Coherence & Cohesion mark.
