IELTS Discuss Both Views Essay

"Discuss both views and give your own opinion" is one of the most common Task 2 types — and one where candidates lose the most marks. The error is always the same: one side gets a full paragraph and the other gets a sentence.

What the examiner is looking for

Both views must be genuinely discussed, not mentioned. Each side needs a full body paragraph with a clear reason, explanation, and example. Your own opinion comes on top, not instead of one side.

Four-paragraph plan

Introduction (paraphrase + state that both views have merit + give your position), Body 1 (first view, developed), Body 2 (second view, developed), Conclusion (restate your position, summarising why).

Where to put your opinion

State it clearly in the introduction and again in the conclusion. The body paragraphs should discuss both sides fairly, but the overall essay should support your position through which side you argue more strongly.

The band-6 trap

Writing one long paragraph about the view you agree with and one short, weak paragraph about the other. This tells the examiner you cannot discuss a view you disagree with, which caps Task Response at 6.

Frequently asked

Do I have to agree with one side completely?

No. You can take a balanced position as long as it is clear and consistent throughout the essay.

Can I write three body paragraphs?

Yes — one for each view and one for your opinion — but the four-paragraph version is easier to execute well in 40 minutes.
