From Band 6 to Band 7 in IELTS Writing
Band 6 to band 7 is the most common jump candidates need to make — and the most frustrating, because you feel you are writing well but your score does not move. The gap is usually on one or two specific criteria, not all four.
Task Response: from addressed to well-developed
At band 6 you address all parts; at band 7 you extend and support each main idea. The fix: every body paragraph needs a clear idea, explanation, example, result pattern, not just a list of points.
Coherence: from mechanical to logical
Band 6 uses linkers correctly but mechanically. Band 7 uses a range of cohesive devices logically, with good paragraphing and clear progression.
Vocabulary: from adequate to flexible
Band 6 has enough vocabulary; band 7 has some flexibility and precision, with less common lexical items. Focus on collocations and topic-specific phrases.
Grammar: from mixed to controlled
Band 6 uses a mix of simple and complex structures with some errors. Band 7 uses a variety of complex structures with good control and frequent error-free sentences.
Frequently asked
Can I improve by one band in a month?
Yes, if you focus on your weakest criterion and practise deliberately rather than just writing more essays.
Should I take classes to get from 6 to 7?
Not necessarily — many candidates do it with focused self-practice and detailed feedback on each essay.
