From Band 5 to Band 6 in IELTS Writing
Band 5 means you can communicate, but the writing has clear weaknesses in every criterion. The good news is that moving to band 6 usually requires fixing a small number of specific issues — not a complete rewrite of your approach.
Task Response at band 5
You address the task only partially, or your position is unclear. The fix: spend 5 minutes planning before you write, and make sure every body paragraph has one clear central idea that answers the question directly.
Coherence & Cohesion at band 5
Some organisation, but no clear overall progression. The fix: use a standard four-paragraph structure and make sure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence.
Lexical Resource at band 5
Limited vocabulary, noticeable errors in word choice and spelling. The fix: build 20–30 collocations for each of the 5 most common IELTS topics (education, technology, environment, health, work).
Grammar at band 5
Limited range of structures, frequent errors that may cause confusion. The fix: do an error audit of your last 3 essays, identify the 2–3 most common error types, and practise only those for a week.
