IELTS Task 1 Academic: Writing the Overview

If you only fix one thing in Academic Task 1, fix the overview. Without a clear overview of the main trends or differences, your Task Achievement band is capped — no matter how good your English is.

What an overview actually is

A short statement, usually at the end of your introduction, that summarises the two or three biggest features of the data: the overall direction, the standout highest/lowest, and any striking contrast.

Where it goes

Most examiners expect it early — after you paraphrase the task in your opening sentence. Some candidates put it in the conclusion; early is safer and clearer.

What to leave out

No specific numbers in the overview. Save figures for the detail paragraphs. The overview is about trends and relationships, not data points.

A reliable formula

"Overall, the most significant trend, while the main contrast." Fill the two slots from the chart, and you have a defensible overview in one sentence.
